*This is part of a series of blogs written during my mom's battle with pancreatic cancer which ended April 13, 2018.
I've just come from spending the last 11 days with my mom who is battling pancreatic cancer. She's completed a full round of chemo and just finished her first 5 of 28 radiation treatments. While I was there, I spent the week doing a 'kitchen makeover' for her. Ditched all of the out of date foods, the processed foods that make her feel sick and filled the fridge with colorful fruits and veggies and cooked and prepped her freezer full of meals for the next 30 days. That was the easy part.
But what to do when the house gets quiet, she's asleep or resting from treatment and the heaviness of the situation hits you in the gut?
And what I often reach for isn't what my body NEEDS but instead is what my emotions WANT. And so begins the tug of war.
As a health and nutrition coach I know WHAT to do and HOW to do it and most of the time it works. But sometimes warm brownies with berries and topping just hits the spot...for awhile. But not for always.
Brownies don't heal cancer and neither do strawberries. And neither do I. As a caregiver (and very part-time at that) my job is to stay well and that means taking care of my emotions in another way than stuffing or starving them. So when things got a little too heavy, I put on my walking shoes or rolled out my yoga mat and moved my body. For me, that works every time with the added bonus of giving me alone time to pray, think, and shed a few tears.
But, from a coach to a client I want you to hear this. Sometimes life hurts. That pain is only there because we love so deeply. My challenge to you is to lean into the pain and not shy away from it, stuff it, or starve it because leaning in is often the only way through it. One client of mine said this, "Leaning in to the present often hurts, but yes, that pain represents something important - I loved, I am loved."
So to those of you who either are hurting, have past wounds that linger or are yet to experience difficulties, YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Lean into those feelings, feel them, celebrate what they represent and share your journey with the support circle around you.

Simply put, I love life. I love the body, all things healthy, all types of movement and a good belly laugh. My hope is to share some of my experience and knowledge with you so that you can love YOUR life and be an influencer of others.
